Japanese government using AI based system to translate sign language to assist deaf citizens – Industry Global News 24

<!–

Local governments in Japan are now using artificial intelligence to improve communication with the deaf citizens.

This system has jointly been developed by the University of Electro-Communications and SoftBank Corp. This system helps in converting sign-language gestures into written text.  Currently the system will require equipment at counters, but the municipality is hoping to use the system from a smartphone.

Highlights

  • SoftBank is developing system using AI to improve communication with deaf people
  • Local Japanese governments are already using this AI based system

The AI system translates the signs into Japanese text and this is called as “Sure Talk”. This system uses recognition technology to analyse the skeletal movements of the body. It studies movements of fingers and arms and converts the signs into Japanese text. The system has been designed by using sign images of hundreds of people.

The city officials said that, conversation with people who are deaf can be carried out by writing but this application has made it much easier and smoother as the translation takes place in real-time.

Chofu in Tokyo and Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture have already set up desk in the city offices, in order to assist people for using this application.

Currently, Sure Talk has more room for improvement, as it can only translate gestures into about 1,500 Japanese words. For accurate translations of signs into Japanese text a large amount of sign language data is needed to build a model, as informed by an engineer from SoftBank.
